童谣，是为儿童作的短诗，强调格律和韵脚，通常以口头形式流传。许多童谣都是根据古代仪式中的惯用语逐渐加工流传而来，或是以较晚一些的历史事件为题材加工而成。

在全世界各民族和文化中，都有童谣的记录。如中国的《三字经》，英国的《一闪一闪小星星》（Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)等。

基本概念

古人说：“童，童子。徒歌曰语。”（《国语·晋语》韦昭注）。“童子歌曰童谣，以其出自胸臆，不由人教也。”（杨慎《丹铅总录》卷二五）。

大体说来，“童谣”是指传唱于儿童之口的、没有乐谱、音节和谐简短的歌谣。它的叫法很多，如清人杜文澜在《古谣谚·凡例》中，把“儿谣、女谣、小儿谣、婴儿谣”等都归入“童谣”一类。此外，其他古籍中还有称“孺子歌”、“童儿歌”、“儿童谣”、“孺歌”、“小儿语”、“女童谣”等的。名称虽不同，内容都是一样的。

世界各国、各民族都有童谣，甚至于没有文字的族群都有童谣。传统童谣属于民间文学之一，应该是包含在民谣中。基本上童谣没有很明确的范畴和界限，凡是民谣中适合孩童听与唱的都可以归类为童谣。当然，童谣的创作者未必是儿童，不论是成人为儿童制作，或是本属于成人的谣，只要是被儿童乐于接受或模仿、而活跃于儿童口耳之间的，都可以将它视为童谣。童谣通常带浓厚的地方特色，诙谐幽默、音节和谐、形式简短，读来朗朗上口。

《诗经》大序说：“情动于中而行于言，言之不足，故嗟叹之：嗟叹之不足，故咏歌之。”

歌谣是人类企图强化表达喜怒哀乐等情绪，藉由语言的自然节奏，所表现出来的美化语言。这种人类的天性常因民族、年龄、身分、环境等而有不同的表现方式，但是，以语言为基础却是放诸四海而皆准的。

然而，将语言的自然节奏进而演化为具备音乐结构的歌曲，却不是儿童所能胜任。因此，不论自发或摹仿，儿童能力所及也止于“谣”的阶段，而谓之“童谣”。至于成人制作、配曲的便是“童歌”（或儿歌）。

说简单，通俗点，但不一定科学：“童谣，应该是由一代代人口耳相传的，在儿童口中传唱的，带浓厚的地方特色，诙谐幽默、音节和谐，形式简短的读来朗朗上口的歌谣。”
